The German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee in flames off the coast of Montevideo, Uruguay on December 17, 1939, shortly after being scuttled by Capt. Hans Langdorff, who committed suicide two days later. The ship had been involved in the Battle of the River Plate four days earlier, where it faced off against a trio of British Royal Navy cruisers at the beginning of the Second World War.
